Hollywood Comedy Movies - From Charlie Chaplin To Jim Carrie (silent comedy)
By Victor Epand
Comedy movies started long back in the 1900s. The first movie to be produced was by Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope. This could also be considered the first to show the comic aspect of a movie. Comedy films began to appear more during the era of silent films, prior to the 1930s. These comedy movies were originally based on visual humor. The prominent figure that we all know as Charlie Chaplin was one of the famous clown-style actors of the silent era. It was through Charlie Chaplin that Hollywood comedy movies became famous. Soon came Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd.
Then in the 1920s came another trend, of animated cartoons. They were the most popular Hollywood comedy movies of the time. Several popular characters of that era were Felix the cat, Krazy Kat and Betty Boop. However, the popularity of these movies was hindered due to lack of sound and color.
By the end of 1920s, the Hollywood comedy industry showed a change brought about by the introduction of sound into movies. This allowed the industry to create dramatic new film styles and use verbal humor. Those films soon replaced silent movies. They used dialogues by comedians such as W.C. Fields and the Marx Brothers. Charlie Chaplin was the last comedian to have acted in a silent film, and his films during 1930s were without dialogue, although they did employ sound effects.
When the United States entered into World War II, Hollywood movies changed their course to themes related to conflicts and Hollywood comedy movies also inclined to military themes. The war era experienced a boom, when due to the restriction on traveling, nearly a quarter of the money spent was spent on movies.
In the 1950s, interest shifted to social situations or family-oriented comedies. During that period the number of Hollywood comedy films declined. The 1960s saw an increasing number of broad, star-packed comedies. In 1970, Hollywood comedy movies reflected the anti-war sentiment which was prevailing then. Amongst the leading figures of this time were Woody Allen and Mel Brooks. They wrote, directed and appeared in their own movies.
In the 1980s, the gag based comedy Airplane, a spoof of the previous decade disaster film series, was released and Hollywood comedy movies followed suit for more of the same including Top Secret and the Naked Gun films. The popular comedians of that time included Dudley Moore, Tom Hanks, Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd. Jim Carrey, the Canadian actor, came into Hollywood comedy movies in the late 1980s when he won a role in Damian Lee Canadian’s skiing comedy, Copper Mountain.
The most popular Hollywood comedy movies were of John Hughes, which included Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and the Home Alone series of 1990s. The latter focused more on a family audience. That showed a revival in comedy movies. Spoof comedy movies have remained popular till date.
Another development in Hollywood comedy movies was the use of gross humor, which is usually aimed at the younger audience, in films like, There’s Something about Mary, American Pie and many more. This trend of gross movies continued with adult oriented comedies picking up the box office for some time more.

The Goodness Of Oprah Winfrey
By dror klar
Who would ever have thought that a slightly overweight woman journalist that also happened to be black would rise to the successful heights that Oprah Winfrey has? If you are one of the millions who watch her show regularly then you know that it should be no surprise at all.
Despite what many of those closed minded people in the world might think, being a woman and also being a minority in this country has nothing to do with ones ability to rise as far as they want to.
Oprah Winfrey has proven to millions that she is one of the most intelligent and gifted people on our planet. If there was ever a perfect example that gender and race has no bearing on one’s abilities, then Oprah is it.
Not only has she ascended from the meanest sorts of poverty and abuse during her childhood, but she has struggled her way through school and the ranks of the journalism world to become recognized for her talk show alone, which through satellite are aired all over the world, but she has built an empire from that same talk show that she has hosted for these many years. Yet she has remained one of the most charitable and most loved celebrities that we have ever had.
The appeal that Oprah has is that she really is still one of us even though she is probably wealthy beyond words. She has never lost the ability to sit down and talk with everyday people about their many difficulties and have as much genuine concern as with they were her own difficulties.
Over the past several years, she has gone to great lengths that others would never have done to help track down the low life predators that prey on our innocent children.
She realizes the extreme importance of finding as many of these criminals as we can and putting them where they belong, out of our society and away from our children. It is about time that someone started speaking out for the children that are affected by these tragic molestations and deaths.
The girl’s school that she has recently opened in Africa is just like something that she would do. It has provided a wonderful opportunity for these girls that they could never have even dreamed of.
It may very well help to reshape the future of that entire region by allowing intelligent young women who would have been overlooked otherwise, to become great additions to the society of the world and begin a new chain of education and a better way of life for them and their offspring as well.
So Oprah, wherever you are, those of us who admire you so greatly, salute you. It is just such a shame that there is not many more in the world just like you.

How The Art Of The Unspoken Word Can Be Funny
Underdogs Chasing The Online Entertainment Titans
By Tyler James Ellison
As a whole, online media has long been caught up in copyright infringements lawsuits with both the music and movie industries. With companies like DailyMotion making deals with traditional media companies, this may be the beginning of a change for online video. The reality of it is that the two media delivery systems had to come together eventually. Innovative ideas and new relationships between online media companies and traditional companies may just pave the road to future for online video. Just remember to watch a small French company, DailyMotion, as they help online video push towards the future.
If you mention the website YouTube, most people know immediately what you are talking about. Thus far, there really hasn’t been much competition for the Google owned video giant. In the shadows of the giant, however, remains the second place video site. Lesser known in America until recently — with innovative ideas and high quality video content, DailyMotion is forcing the larger video site to take a look.
At the time of this writing, DailyMotion receives approximately ten thousand new videos every day, and serves up 16 million page views everyday. Although 16 million pales in comparison to YouTubes 100 million videos served per day, DailyMotion has gained some Hollywood attention since it US debut earlier this year. That very attention from some big names in the entertainment industry may just lead DailyMotion’s quest to be the number one video sharing site.
Although the smaller company does not have the clout that YouTube carries with Google’s financial backing, Dailymotion is the first site of its type to sign on with a traditional television station. Before its U.S. launch Daily Motion video signed on with the French T.V. station TF1. The deal allowed the television station to play the best from DailyMotion and it allowed the website access to some of TF1’s programming. It was the first deal of its type to mix online video with traditional television delivery.
Shortly after its U.S. launch DailyMotion signed on with RDF. The U.S. company sells programming to traditional television stations, and is best known for it’s television series featuring Shaquille O’Neal. Together the two companies plan to come up with eight new programming concepts. They will share in the ad revenues from the concepts, and they plan to come up with new targeted ad campaigns to fit in with the programming. It is another pioneering deal in the world of online video. Along with the deal DailyMotion raised thirty four million in capital from a British investment firm.
DailyMotion very much still sits in the shadow of the giant, but with their innovative ideas and push towards growth, it may be interesting to watch as the up and coming company may just give YouTube a run for its money. The world of video sharing has been around for a while, but it in the past couple years with sites like YouTube and DailyMotion coming into play, the ideas have really taken off.
