This is a well made comedy drama for a journey of self discovery, focusing on a law student Sherman Black played by Michael Shulman who discovers a little about himself and life from a road trip with a two-time Olympian, Palmer played by James LeGros (Ally McBeal).

We meet Sherman with his girlfriend Marcy played by the lovely Lacey Chabert (she has grown quite a lot since the amazing child actress in Party of Five). Marcy has issues with Sherman for not taking charge and making his own decisions, it turns out every aspect of his life is being controlled by his powerful mother Evelyn, played by Donna Murphy (she still looks as ageless as she did with Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Insurrection), she controls which law firm he chooses to do his internship, and is against him spending the summer with Marcy.

Sherman decides to go against the grain and prove to Marcy that he can make decisions for himself, and attempts to ignore his mother’s wishes by spending the summer with Marcy, without letting her know, he intends to just turn up at her door step, in the process he happens to bump into another fellow who helps him with his luggage, on both of them reaching Marcy’s front door, he is a little surprised to see Marcy kissing the guy, she eventually notices him and while he walks away in a rage, she follows him, but instead of apologising she says “this is what it seems” and tells him she is just trying to explore the different options life has in store for her.

In his anger Sherman decides to go back to the law internship his mother had arranged for him, and hails a driver to give him a lift, and Palmer arrives, fresh from an unfortunate performance at a car dealership, which he left with a classic vehicle nicknamed “The Rooster”, it turns out Palmer is estranged from his son, and would like to give him “The Rooster” as a graduation present, except his son graduated three years ago. After a short stop at a dinner, Sherman unfortunately finds out he has lost his wallet getting into Palmer’s car, and has no option but to phone his mother for financial assistance, however he takes this opportunity to stand his ground against her demands, and stays with Palmer to prove a point to himself that he can make his own decisions.

The two unlucky individuals find themselves paired together at the home of Palmer’s friend D.J., played by Enrico Colantoni (A.I.), and although they seem to be polar opposites; with Sherman intent on keeping a schedule, while Palmer on the other hand would rather take life as it comes, they end up learning from each other. While Palmer’s Rooster is being fixed Sherman does some shopping around the town for his supplies, and bumps into the lovely and odd Addy, played by Brooke Nevin (The 4400), they become friendly and Sherman asks her on a date, unfortunately he cannot drive, neither can he swim, and ends up having Palmer drive both of them around, where they end up in a lake, in a very comical scene.

It is a lovely romantic movie, many will enjoy.

Movie - Four Christmases

By Mr D Stevens

This is a lovely holiday season movie, starring the lovely Resse Witherspoon (playing a far different character these days than the affectionate and effervescing young lady in Legally Blonde) as Kate and the hyperactive Vince Vaughn (The Wedding Crashers) as Brad, a couple who would rather spend Christmas vacationing in Fiji than with their families, in fact they make it a ritual during the holidays to go on vacation but to lie to their families that they are involved in a worthy cause (usually charity) that can justify their exclusion during any holiday event.

Over the years their lies about inoculating babies in Burma, or doing some other charity work has always helped them avoid their families for Christmas, but on this particular time as they are waiting at the airport, it turns out all flights have been cancelled because of a bad fog, and a TV crew happens to be interviewing passengers on how they feel about their flights being cancelled during the holiday period, they so happen to come upon Brad and Kate, much to their embarrassment as their phones soon afterwards start ringing; with their respected families saying they have seen them on TV.

Brad and Kate now see they have no choice but to visit all four of their families (Brad’s mum and dad played by the stalwart Robert Duvall The GodFather as Howard and Sissy Spacek JFK as Paula, since they are divorced) and Kate’s families (her mum and dad, played by the dependable Jon Voight Midnight Cowboy as Creighton and Mary Steenburgen In The Electric Mist as Marilyn, who are equally divorced) hence the name Four Christmases.

The first visit is to the home of Brad’s father, it turns out his brothers Denver and Dallas played by Jon Favreau (The Break-Up) and Tim McGraw, are UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) type cage fighters (except there are not professional but only upload their fights on youtube), and no sooner are they re-acquainted does Brad finds himself in some bone crunching wrestling moves, it turns out this is the norm, and that Brad’s real name is Orlando, which Kate didn’t know, she takes him to one side to ask why he didn’t feel comfortable with her after three years of a relationship, to reveal this bit about himself, he says he changed his name because he didn’t like it, and didn’t see a problem. It also turns out that there is a $10 limit to the presents that should be bought for the children, however Brad was unaware of this and bought an Xbox for one of his nephews, while the other nephew has to make do with a torch light, much to the father’s embarrassment.

The visit to Kate’s family also reveals some of her fears, that for some time the kids around the neighbourhood avoided her because they thought she had cooties, calling her “Cootie Kate”, and her passive aggressive older sister Courtney played by the endearing Kristin Chenoweth (RV) reveals these embarrassing secrets.

The visits amongst Brad’s and Kate’s respective families shows that the couple are not as close to each other as they thought, especially during a game where the partner has to guess what card the other half is holding, without giving out the name, and this prompts Kate especially to reconsider if they are true and comfortable with each other to spend the rest of their lives together.

It is a warm festive movie, the whole family will enjoy.

You cant drink and drive. Taxis are expensive. Public transport isnt cheap, either, and can be unpredictable, inconveniently timetabled and intimidating, especially late at night. Tickets for entertainments are pricey, especially if a whole-family outing is involved. Eating out can cost a small fortune, and theres no guarantee youll even enjoy the food.

Instead of all that, why not treat yourselves to a good night in at home? Theres much to recommend it.

Having a night in rather than night out means no travel costs, delays, or frustrations. With all the excellent drama, documentaries and comedy on television, there is cheap entertainment for all the family. In fact, some comedy TV is better than watching the same performers live in a theatre. You get a clearer view, see them close-up and can even replay if you miss the punch line. And there are no irritating strangers in the next seats. Your favourite refreshments are constantly on tap at your own supermarket prices, and you dont have to queue for the loo in the interval. You can wear your comfy flip-flops and pyjama bottoms, and can lounge or snuggle up on the sofa whenever you like. And if you want more company, you can invite friends round to watch too, at no extra cost. In fact, with the great comedy series on TV now, you may well decide to make a good night in an enjoyable habit.

This is a very amusing horror comedy, in the vein of Shaun of the Dead, that focuses on a similar world where everyone or most of the world is a zombie.

We meet Columbus (everyone in the movie calls themselves by places instead of real names) played by Jesse Eisenberg (he has one of those faces you are sure you have seen somewhere but can’t quite identify where) who is one of the last surviving humans in the U.S. and has developed a variety of rules to staying alive such as limbering up before going into any vicinity where zombies may be around, keeping his heart fit, and always taking care when at his most vulnerable i.e. when in the toilet.

We also get flashbacks to unfortunate victims who fell to the zombie plague, all through the opening credits,. It turns out Columbus only survived because he kept to himself, and only found out about the plague, when a lovely girl came knocking at his door, complaining that a tramp had sprinted at her, at first she thought he was chasing someone, but when he reached her he bit her. Columbus was more interested that such a lovely girl would be at his door, and was stroking her hair as she fell asleep when inevitably she turned into a zombie and started lunging at him.

Columbus happens to bump into Tallahassee played by Woody Harrelson (No country for old men), there is a amicable stand-off where the pair think each other is a zombie and wait for any hints at humanity before introducing one another. Together they plan on going to Columbia where Columbus has a faint hope his parents may still be alive, as he puts it, he is a loner who didn’t appreciate those who cared about him or anyone in particular when the world was OK, but now just seeing a familiar face would make things a lot more easier.

On their way to helping Tallahassee find a Twinky, with Tallahassee’s usual antics of antagonising the zombies with loud noises so they come out and get the customary treatment with whatever he happens to have in hand, they bump into two sisters, Wichita played by the gorgeous Emma Stone (The House Bunny) and Little Rock played by the lovely Abigal Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) who luckily are still alive, but trick them into taking their ammunition and their vehicle.

Of course they inevitably meet again, after the car they have stolen from Columbus and Tallahassee breaks down, and are forced on a road trip together, but not before Tallahassee and Columbus find a vehicle containing plenty of ammunition to which Tallahassee says “Thank God for rednecks”.

As they pass by Hollywood, Tallahassee decides to take them to the home of a superstar (as he puts it even bigger than Tom Cruise). There is a lovely cameo by Bill Murray (Ghostbusters) playing himself, he happens to dress up as a zombie to fit around, and he even joins them re-enacting scenes from Ghostbusters.

Columbus meanwhile is beginning to fall for Wichita, who equally has trust issues, and Tallahassee is still after that Twinky.

It is a hilarious horror-comedy, many will like instantly.

Traditionally, belief systems hold a series of celebrations to offer honor to their God or gods.

The term feast in secular vernacular refers to a large or elaborate supper. In relation to festival, it usually implies a spiritual festival other than a film or art festival.

Word Origin

The word festival had been obtained from the Old English fest and festivus from Old French. It was additionally rooted to the word festivus in Ancient latin. In the year 1589, it had been made use of as a noun other than the fourteenth century adjective that means to rejoice for the duration of a holiday of the church. The word feast has origins fairly similar to festival. It has been handed down from the Old English feste and festa from Ancient latin.

Goal

The aim of festivals in many varieties is to fulfill groups’ specific societal wants and obligations. Aside from the entertainment that they bring about, these community dealings provide a way of being a part of people of religions, societal or geographical groups. Traditionally, a feast offered a way of growing unity amongst families and opportunities to discover a companion or mate. Festivals were occasions when the community elders did communicate stories and pass knowledge to the youthful members. Modern ethnic and cultural festivals at the present concentrate on spreading of information about traditions amongst people.

Kinds

Festivals have many religious beginnings. Others have certain seasonal recurring meaning or cultural import. Around the world, societies including some institutions, have a good time during several fests or festivals. It is normally celebrated annually to denote some a vital occasion of their past.

Recurring Celebrations

These sorts of festivals are determined by the succession of the seasons and by the solar and moon phases which inadvertently affects the food supply. Seasonal recurring celebrations such as the traditional Egyptians inundation which was attributable to the Nile River and the irrigation it offered to make the earth bountiful for plants.

Almabtrieb is a seasonal recurring fest within the Alps that commemorates the homecoming of the cows back from mountain pastures to the stables in fall. Fests determined by the moon cycles are Winter Fests and the Chinese New Year which is well known from the day of the brand new lunar cycle after the winter solstice.

Christmas after all, is the celebration of the beginning of Jesus and signifies the start of salvation in the new year. Octoberfest in Germany is the celebration of the harvest in the fall and is widely known with beer, music and food fests.

Institutions celebrating fests’

These festivals are often known as Fests. Some examples are Mecca or Hindu College, Delhi; Rendezvous of IIT Delhi and plenty of more.

Historical Festivals

Historical Egyptians celebrated festivals based mostly on their non secular religion. One celebration begun by Ramesses III, nevertheless, was to celebrate his triumph over Libya . Feasts are decided by moon phases on the Egyptian calendar.

Modern Celebrations

Modern times have expanded the kinds of fests that societies celebrate. Listed below are some frequent festivals which can be predominant today:

Randy happens to borrow money from a loan shark, which unbeknown to him is connected with the Mob. Soon afterwards he starts getting phone calls from a Mob guy, Franco played by Paul Ben-Victor (Tombstone) as to when and how he is going to settle his debt, Randy tries to explain that as hard as he has tried he cannot come up with the money for the debt as well as his increasing debt with the IRS (Internal Revenue Service).

After asking around and finding out that he could be in some serious trouble with the Mafia, Randy contemplates selling one of his businesses to Elmore Culpepper where Burt Reynolds (Boogie Nights) does a short cameo.

Surprisingly Franco has a solution to his financial troubles, and that involves sending Tino Armani played surprisingly well by Walton Goggins (unrecognisable from his character in The Shield), to sort out his financial troubles, even so much as to pay off the IRS. On their first meeting Randy is amazed to find out that Tino has the same country dialect as he does, to which Tino responds he never judges people by the pigment in their skin or their dialect. After a while Randy is even more impressed by how seemingly good natured Tino is, and soon all in the small community are besotted by Tino. He even manages to improve the menu on one of Randy’s restaurant businesses that had so many people queueing to get in when Randy arrived he automatically assumed there was an incident and that the police had been called. At this stage it should be mentioned Randy has an on-going problem with one of the local law enforcement officers Griff Postell, played by Brent Briscoe (Mulholland Drive) who seems to have it in for him at every opportunity, since Griff blames him for a “whooping” he gave him in the third grade, which many witnessed, but Griff subsequently gave Randy a “whooping” in the sixth grade, but unfortunately no one witnessed it.

As well as trying to solve his financial troubles, Randy has to cope with his wife Charlotte, played by the lovely Lisa Blount (The Accountant) newly acquired Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from dancing lessons she has been giving, which has left her a little depressed, and trying to patch the relationship with his gay twin brother and his partner Bill played by Tim DeKay (The Russell Girl). A relationship Randy has never accepted, much to the annoyance of his twin and his partner.

This is a surprisingly genial comedy drama, and it contains some classic scenes, especially where Randy is on the phone to Franco while at a rubbish tip.

Ray McKinnon is effortlessly adept between the two roles, and it is an entertaining movie many will enjoy.

Featuring a unique brand of alienated-teenage humor, the film relies more on its well-timed pauses and character body language than on zinging one-liners. If you enjoy its subtle humor, then Napoleon Dynamite is a film you’ll find utterly hilarious. Otherwise, it might cause boredom or outright confusion. The film has a near non-existent storyline, but what it lacks in plot, it makes up for with its witty and hilarious comedy sequences…

Jon Heder plays the title role of Napoleon Dynamite, an estranged and nerdy high school youth living with his grandmother and older brother, Kip (Aaron Ruell), in Preston, Idaho. Sporting a clueless, unchanging facial expression throughout the movie, Napoleon simply glides through life, getting kicked around, pushed into lockers, and watching life pass by. When a Spanish student named Pedro (Efren Ramirez) moves into town, Napoleon befriends the social outcast. The two drone on and on about myriad subjects, such as who to take to the upcoming dance. Fellow socially-challenged student Deb (Tina Majorino) becomes the object of their affections.

Meanwhile, Kip trolls the Internet chat rooms in search of women, and Napoleon’s Uncle Rico (Jon Gries) moves in with the boys while their grandmother is away. Uncle Rico’s own exploits add to the hilarity of a film with little in the way of substance, at least until Pedro decides to run for class president against the school’s most popular girl, Summer (Haylie Duff). Now, Napoleon and Pedro must work against all odds to win the school election…

The true strength of Napoleon Dynamite is its clan of outrageous characters, characters that are so outrageously ridiculous that every viewer can point out the mirror image of that character from his own high school yearbook or current life experience. The arrested social development of Napoleon and his friends are amplified for effect within the film’s context, drawing the viewer into a Lord of the Flies world of Darwinian adolescence. The humor is sometimes subtle, and Napoleon Dynamite is not to be confused with an Academy Award winning drama. But if you like stupid movies such Dumb And Dumber, then this is the film for you.

Napoleon Dynamite is a unique comedy which pushes the boundaries of plot-challenged, immature filmmaking. In short, you’ll love it. Most of the characters are so pathetic, you’ll find yourself laughing at them simply because they exist. One of the biggest surprises of 2004, Napoleon Dynamite is an oddball comedy that definitely ranks as a must-see movie…

It stars Reece Thompson as Bobby Funke (he constantly has to remind everyone his name is not “funky” but it doesn’t stop anyone from calling him that) and the lovely Mischa Barton (St. Trinians) as Francesca Fachini, the girlfriend of the High School President.

Bobby is trying to write a paper for the local school and from it get acceptance into North Western’s journalist programme, he first has to get the approval of the head columnist Clara played by Melonie Diaz (Be Kind Rewind) who Bobby also likes, but
not as much as he likes the girlfriend of the High School President Patrick Moore played by Paul Taylor, something about this reminds me of “Bart got a room”.

It turns out someone has stolen the entire schools SAT’s from the Principal’s locker, Principal Kirkpatrick a former war veteran who doesn’t waste anytime reminding the students how patriotic it is to fight for one’s country, played hilariously by Bruce Willis (Die Hard). He apparently has a list of the usual suspects, and calls them in, including Bobby, Bobby innocently asks the reason why he has been summoned, to which Principal Kirkpatrick says “for chewing gum”. Apparently Principal Kirkpatrick is a stickler about gum chewing, there is a funny scene where Bobby is trying to convey some important information to the Principal, but replies after a much heated conversation with “is that gum in your mouth”?

Bobby is given an opportunity to find out who stole the schools SAT’s by the Principal, and he sees this as his big chance to get into North Western, if he can identify the thief/thieves with a well written story.

Although unrealistic, he takes the role of an investigative journalist, interviewing all the suspects, and they all seem candid, which is a little unrealistic for high school, but that doesn’t ruin a great story.

There is a well played scene, where Bobby is interviewing the little sister of the High School President, Chrissy Moore played by Gabrielle Brennan, she tells him she will tell him all of Patrick’s secrets if he gets her a unicorn, to which he replies unicorns aren’t real, and she makes a scowl pointing at she wants one of the unicorn dolls they are surrounded by.

In his investigations Bobby inevitably gets the attention of the current High School President’s girlfriend, and amazing as it seems she falls for him after his article, much to the surprise of all involved, there is a great scene where he asks her what she sees in him, to which she replies she gets the feeling he would still look at her in the same way if there was no school.

He also interviews the Vice-President played by Luke Grimes (Ryan Lafferty in Brothers and Sisters), the half-brother of Francesca, who seems at first to have no problems with Byron going out with his half-sister.

It is an interesting story, focusing on the challenges of high school for acceptance, and getting along with those who are popular. It also has a few unforeseen twists and plots that makes it that little bit more interesting, and Bobby gets to find out that not everything is what it seems.

Mitsuru Adachi, a widely known sports (mostly baseball) manga author was born February 9, 1951 in Isezaki, Japan. Debuting in 1970, he became famous after mangas like Touch and Nine. They brought him popularity and recognition throughout Asia. His most works feature senior pupils or college students as lead characters. Since 1970 he has published over 20 mangas including short story collections and multi-volume series.

Manga Nine (released in 1978) is a high school baseball and romance story. It made Adachi a renowned Japanese mangaka and proceeded to 3 TV series. Katsuya and Susumu start playing baseball to impress Yuri, Katsuya’s girlfriend later appearing the coach’s daughter. But Katsuya is also adored by Yukimi… The intrigue is about love relations and the team’s success.

1980 released Adachi’s early big manga Miyuki (12 volumes). Wakamatsu Masato and his step-sister Miyuki are high schoolers in Toukyou living on their own without their father working overseas. Charming Miyuki is a star among guys around Masato while he dates Kajima Miyuki, a dream high school girl. Only after eventful years do the “flatmates” realize their personal preferences. The well-styled manga boasts an interesting plot, nice scene and youth emotions.

The next year saw Adachi’s superhit manga Touch (26 volumes) finished in print in 2005. This shounen story tells about 2 twin brothers, their pretty neighbor and baseball activity.

The manga (1981-1986) belongs to a top author, Mitsuru Adachi. This wonderful writer usually relates his stories to baseball and Koshien, the stadium of the All High School Baseball Tournament.

The Rough manga was released in 1987 now counting up 12 volumes. It’s a romance/sports story seemingly inspired by Romeo and Juliet. 2 young gifted sportsmen, Yamato Keisuke and Ninomiya Ami, come from rival confectionery families. Ninomiya’s grandfather had marketed an owl-shaped cake, but Yamato’s grandfather copied the product adding ears which killed the competitive business. After such a shock Ninomiya died cursing the Yamatos and starting their war.

Manga Nijiiro Togarashi (Rainbow-Colored Chili Powder, 1990) is Adachi’s rare sci-fi manga (11 volumes). Here Shichimi is going to Edo (Tokyo’s pre-capital name). His deceased mother had just left him a walnut and sent him to his half-siblings. Shichimi makes farewell to an old tough firefighter whose cloak emblem is the same with his. On arrival in Edo Shichimi faces a stranger sneering at outer peace and disillusioning people.

The H2 manga was in print 1992 to 2004 becoming Adachi’s biggest work (34 volumes). It developed into a namesake series. Kunimi Hiro had been a baseball talent before learning his arm was crucially damaged. So he transfers to a high school without a baseball team only to find out there his arm had a wrong diagnosis being perfectly OK. Then Hiro arranges a premier baseball team against his ex best friend and teammate, Hideo, in the Koshien.

2000 released a 5-volume manga Always Beautiful Sky (Itsumo Misora) about 6 kids brought together by providence.

The Katsu! manga has been released since 2002. In it Satoyama Katsuki is a carefree and lazy teenager. His secret love, Mizutani Katsuki, has a father who was a pro boxer and inherits this hobby. Satoyama enters a boxing gym just to impress Mizutani but soon discovers genius abilities inside…

The Cross Game manga has reached 17 volumes so far since 2005. It proceeded into an anime series. The hero, Kitamura Koh, has long befriended the Tsukishimas. Their ties are even supported by symbols. But their friendship has to shockingly end some day…

In 2009 Adachi released a short manga, My Sweet Sunday, together with another famous Japanese writer, Rumiko Takahashi. It’s an autobiography describing their careers in the manga business.

2009 also released the Q and A manga currently in 2 volumes. 15-year-old Atsushi Ando’s family returns to their towna after some time. There he encounters fortunes and misfortunes due to pranks by his dead older brother, Hitsushi Ando aka Q-Chan, whose death caused this move. The biggest prank is that only Atsushi can see the ghost.

Mitsuru Adachi is a baseball fan as a viewer and even an owner of a team called Vitamin A. He’s been focusing his manga on this sport for years leaving no doubt about keeping up the trend.

Dani is a huge lover of manga. He suggests visiting the website AnyManga.com to read mangas online.
